I hope that you are all keeping well! I thought I would do a few little posts over the coming year to give you a bit of an insight into the behind the scenes at Evie Jade.
First up I wanted to let you know a bit about what my jewellery is made from. All the items currently available from Evie Jade Jewellery are made using T-shirt yarn, or jersey yarn, so I thought I would give you a little insight into this interesting material that I use!
WHAT IS T-SHIRT YARN?
T-Shirt Yarn is made using the remnants of the textile industry. When clothing companies produce a t-shirt there is a certain amount of fabric which is cut off and thrown away. This fabric would otherwise go to landfill, but instead it is sliced up into strips, sewn together, and rolled into a skein. The yarn is soft, but tough, and it sort of curls in on itself, making a smooth rounded edge, like a cord. The raw edges don’t fray because it is a knitted fabric, and it has plenty of stretch. It also comes in a gorgeous range of colours and prints.
As the yarn is from a range of different t-shirts then there is variety in each piece, and depending on how the material has been cut it may be thicker or thinner than the last batch, therefore I have to tinker with my designs and each piece I make is a little different.
IS IT ECO-FRIENDLY?
T-shirt yarn is a completely recycled material. The off cuts from the textile industry which would ordinarily be thrown away find a new life and become something beautiful and usable. Every skein is slightly different and has its own little story. The jewellery I create is soft but chunky, it is very tactile and is so beautifully coloured. I love how it can lift a basic outfit of mum jeans and a basic tee.
